This is a great book. It gives a careful popular understanding of how Islam came to be and why it can be so violent. He is an expert, but you don't have to be in order to understand it. He knows Islam and the Quran. He does not shy away from hard hitting critiques of Islam, Muhammad, and Muslims. He does a good job of showing how studying this can actually strengthen ones Christian faith. For Muslims it offers a different perspective that might help them break out of their violence and bigotry. It should be required reading.

Far and away, the best book I've ever read on Islam. The author has studied it extensively for many years, traveling abroad to Islamic countries and personally encountering both Islamism and moderates. He introduces readers to pre-Islamic culture and poetry in Arabia, showing how they paved the way for the advent of Islam. He has not only studied the religion in great depth but has mastered the Arabic language as well, giving him an edge when it comes to debating the veracity of the faith. He also does this in a comparative way with Christianity as he himself is a cradle Catholic. He highlights significant differences between Christian and Islamic theology, making note of the ways in which the latter appropriated certain Judeo-Christian teachings while casting aside those that did not support Muhammad's claims to prophethood. He also notes parts of the Qur'an that demonstrate a clear misunderstanding of Judaism and Christianity, further giving credence to the claim that the Qur'an is of human, not divine origin. I wish I could give more than five stars. This book certainly deserves it.

His explication of Quranic and biblical texts is careful and illuminating. Most of what is here, including precious material that has not appeared before, Pinault has translated from the original sources.

When I got this in the 70s' it elevated my musical knowledge to a high level. It's not your typical music book but you can get so much out of it if you really give it a try. This book is an awesome piece of work by the author meant to be with you to check in on and open any page and come away having learned something.So glad I was able to get anew copy.

I’ve been playing informally for about 10 years now (no bands, very few gigs, sit-ins here and there, mostly personal enjoyment) so I’m not a “serious” player by any stretch of the imagination. However I have a decent understanding of the basics and this guide is the perfect fit for me. Very clear explanations and diagrams and an absolute powerhouse of information. Very excited to see where my playing goes as I’m working through it - it’s given me the push I needed to really grow in skill set and enjoyment.

For me it would have been greatly improved If what seem to be handwritten chord charts were more legible and at least 50% larger for my eyes. (Normal Eyes ) I also found the language in some portion of the book a bit on the abstruse/obstruse and dense side for me. Still I love the title and look of the book which still holds me hopeful and willing to struggle with its imperfections. I would not however recommend it to those who do not have a very sure footing with their theory, or beginners who can be discourage by the sense of insurmountable challenge.

There is a reason that this book has been reprinted; the information and the step by step process is great. I haven't gotten all the way through it yet, but I understand how things fit together in a way that I didn't before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that really wants to understand how chords work and how to use alternatives to for each chord progression.

Not much to add to the myriad of comments, except maybe don't go cover to cover like I did. It was like drinking from a fire hose. It's a great chord reference book!

Excellent book! It will take a lot of time to get all of this stuff under your fingers but it has helped me already with understanding the fret board better and how chords work, in addition I have learned a lot of cool chords I can use when composing stuff. The possibilities are endless! Lots of chord progressions. Just pick out the stuff that fits your needs. Some of the chords are impossible to play (for me anyway) due to the large stretches involved.

The first and last chord theory book you will ever need. If you're a serious musician you owe it to yourself to have this reference and teaching book in your collection.

This book is a absolute goldmine of beautiful chord voicing melodies presented in short examples of I-vi-ii-V sequences and many permutations that cover extensive harmonic ground and copious use of substitution. Studying this book in earnest will give a jazz guitar a totally comprehensive vocabulary of voicing and chord melody movements for playing jazz guitar, whether it be solo or with a bassist. Voicings used go from basic to highly colorful, including extensive study of quartal voicings, cluster voicings, rootless and root voicings, and more. About the Author
Timothy Corrigan is Professor of Cinema Studies, English, and History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. His work in film studies focuses on modern American and international cinema, as well as on pedagogy and film. He is coauthor, with Patricia White, of The Film Experience: An Introduction (2009). His most recent book is The Essay Film from Montaigne, after Marker. He is an editor of the journal Adaptation and serves on the editorial board of Cinema Journal. He has taught film at the University of Amsterdam, Temple University, University of Iowa, and at campuses in Tokyo, Rome, Paris, and London.  Patricia White is Professor of Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College. She is the author of Uninvited: Classical Hollywood Cinema and Lesbian Representability and is completing a new book on global women's filmmaking in the twenty-first century. With Timothy Corrigan, she is co-author of The Film Experience and co-editor of Critical Visions in Film Theory: Classic and Contemporary Readings. Between this book and "Feeling Good" I was able to defuse a very public and very painful work situation that happened to me. I wrote a detailed review of the situation in my review for "Feeling Good" so I won't go into specifics here, but I will say it was so bad that I found myself screaming at a new coworker without even realizing how loud I was. I was told later that my voice was so loud that the entire office rang with every word. No joke.The "Feeling Good" book was really good for me to write down all the bad feelings that I had about myself and how I was being treated by this new coworker. It was also good to then continue with the exercise on how I could turn that all around. And I did! I was shocked to see that my reactions to her were changing in a positive way, even though she was threatening me with lawsuits just like before and unable to do her job, just like before.This book, "Feeling Good Together" builds on the first book by introducing the "EAR" concept. EAR stands for Empathy, Assertiveness, and Respect. It was VERY helpful for me when I had to say some not so good things to people about their performance, but do it in a respectful way. I had never before had a tool to assert myself without being negative about it. That exercise was worth the price of this book 100x over.I've bought several copies of this book, but nobody wants to read it. If they really understood why it was so valuable to me, I think they would give it a closer look.

A very wise woman recommended this book to me. She thought it could help me improve my family relationships. So far I've been reading it with my boyfriend and doing the exercises together. We've loved it, it has really made a difference in our relationship. We've been able to talk about really difficult topics that we used to avoid.I loved it so much that I actually bought 3 copies, and I bought some of his other books too!It will only help if you actually DO THE EXERCISES. That's my number one tip.

This book made me rethink how I communicate with others--especially in situations where emotions run high. I realize it's pitched as helping with personal interactions but I'd suggest every organization, every company could benefit if it encouraged all it's employees to read this book. Overnight I suspect those companies and organizations would see a vast improvement in productivity and unit cohesion. On a personal level, this book has made me realize why some past interactions went disastrously wrong and helped me move forward while taking part in some difficult but important conversations that could impact both my personal and professional life.

I have read many books on communication and have attended many marriage seminars and the like. This book caught my attention for some reason. I have now purchased 5 copies. I bought them for both of my sons and my husband. We bought the e-book, but my husband wanted a hard copy to take notes. I thought that was a good sign he would take it seriously! We have been married for 50 years and have a good marriage. This book has taught me many things. I feel that it has already improved our communication. Also, I realized some of the destructive habits I was doing in my conversation with my children and grandchildren. I am hoping I will be able to improve my communication in a variety of settings as I continue to use the principles I have learned in this book.

This book has become my new relationship bible. It will take much more practice because there are so many techniques to master. The exercises will need to be practiced several times until it becomes second nature to focus on improving relationships rather than win arguments. TEAM - CBT Offers an option to endless therapy. Bravo Dr. Burns for having the courage to share this with the world, challenging “the old ways”.

I found this book to have wonderful insights. The tone of the book makes you feel as though you are discussing things with a trusted and thoughtful friend. The exercises in the book helped to channel some disconnected thoughts into something more coherent. I found this book to be helpful.

I'm an intern marriage and family therapist and I have specialized in couples and families. I have read many books from different authors, including the acclaimed Dr. John Gottman. Dr. David Burns' book is the best I have ever read. The book is easy to understand and the concepts are very practical. I bought the book in audio and kindle. I read it three times to thoroughly understand and grasp the message. I highly recommend it for anybody who wants to master their ability to relate with people and communicate in a kind and respectful way.

Best relationship book I've ever read. Even if you aren't in a relationship at the moment this book should be required reading for everyone.
